Caring for Your Jewellery

Your SHULU jewellery is made to be worn and treasured. With a little care, your pieces will remain as beautiful as the day you first wore them.

Caring for Your Pearls

Cultured pearls are organic gems with thick nacres – they will last for generations if handled gently and cared for properly.

To keep your pearls lustrous:

    • Put pearls on last when dressing – after perfume, hairspray, cosmetics and body lotions, as chemicals can dull their surface
    • Wipe gently with a soft, damp cloth after wearing to remove skin oils and perspiration
    • Store flat or in a soft pouch – never hang your pearl jewellery, as this can stretch the silk thread over time
    • Prolonged water exposure can weaken the silk thread – remove your pearls before bathing, showering, swimming, or using a steam room or sauna
    • Have your pearl jewellery restrung periodically, especially if worn frequently
    • Keep away from ultrasonic cleaners, harsh chemicals and abrasive materials

    Semi-Precious Stone Jewellery

Protect your jewellery from impact against hard surfaces and avoid contact with abrasive surfaces. Many stones, such as amethyst, emerald, kunzite, opal, peridot, tanzanite and tourmaline, are delicate and easily abraded. Enamel can also chip or scratch when struck.

    • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can fade certain stones over time
    • Remove your jewellery before bathing, showering, swimming, or using a steam room or sauna, as prolonged water exposure can weaken the thread
    • Store pieces separately  in a soft pouch or lined jewellery box to prevent scratching

    Elastic and Monofilament Line Care

Some of our pieces are strung on elastic cord or monofilament line, which need the same general care as pieces strung on silk cord to avoid degrading over time.

    • Avoid Chemicals and Water: Remove your jewellery before swimming, showering, washing dishes, or applying lotions, cosmetics and perfumes, as these break down the fibres
    • Proper Usage: Roll elastic bracelets over your hand rather than pulling them, which can stretch the cord permanently
    • Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent the cord from becoming brittle
